More than 85 unofficial Islamic shari’a ‘courts’ operate in the UK, reveals a report by the think-tank Civitas. The courts can make legally-binding rulings upheld by civil courts in England and Wales, under the 1996 Arbitration Act. There are increasing concerns about the way in which the courts operate, and particularly over their treatment of women. Among the examples quoted are laws banning a Muslim woman from marrying a non-Muslim unless he converts to Islam and the removal of a wife’s property rights in the event of divorce.
